About This Place

Quixote, nestled in the vibrant neighborhood of San Diego’s El Cajon Boulevard, offers an extraordinary dive into elevated Mexican cuisine unlike any other. This is not your typical taco spot—Quixote crafts a culinary experience that’s as visually captivating as it is flavorful, set against a stunning backdrop reminiscent of an old cathedral with beautiful stained glass and moody, medieval-inspired décor. Walking inside, you immediately feel transported to a place where every detail—from the dim lighting perfect for intimate conversations to the carefully curated artwork—creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that feels both special and personal.

The menu at Quixote is a treasure trove of bold, inventive takes on Mexican classics with a sophisticated twist. From standouts like the tender, smoky Pulpo and creamy Oaxacan Cheese Fondue to the vibrant freshness of their Ceviche and delicate Squash Blossoms, each dish is designed to awaken your palate with complex layers of flavor. The Chili Garlic Shrimp Tacos are a must-try, delivering succulent shrimp wrapped in perfectly spiced tortillas that burst with texture and zest. The Crab Corn Doughnut, surprisingly not made of corn but a crunchy, savory delight, has quickly earned rave reviews for its originality and taste. For something refreshing, the Aguachile beautifully balances heat and citrus, making every bite vibrant and lively.

Quixote doesn’t just stop at food; their drink menu is an equally exciting adventure. The tequila selection pairs exquisitely with their food, and the sparkling offerings like Castell D'age’s elegant Cuvee Anne Marie Rosé Brut provide a celebratory fizz that complements the richness of the dishes. Cocktails such as their smooth and refreshingly balanced Espresso Martini or the standout Bay Scallop Black Cocktail elevate the dining experience to new heights, enhancing the festive, yet intimate vibe of the restaurant.

But what truly sets Quixote apart is its attentive, heartfelt service. Guests repeatedly praise servers like Roxanne and Danny for their warm hospitality, expert knowledge, and genuine care in curating personalized, memorable dining experiences. One birthday guest recalled how Roxanne’s thoughtful touch—a birthday shot, a rose, and a custom dessert—made their celebration unforgettable, a testament to the passion and joy the staff bring to every table.

While Quixote leans toward the pricier side, patrons agree it’s well worth every cent for the quality, creativity, and care infused into every aspect of the meal and ambiance. Whether you’re looking for a romantic date spot with a dimly lit, cozy vibe or a festive evening out with friends exploring daring flavor combinations, Quixote promises a unique Mexican dining journey that excites your senses and leaves a lasting impression.

I had the most incredible birthday dinner at Quixote, and Roxy made the entire night unforgettable. From the moment I sat down, she radiated kindness, warmth, and genuine joy in what she does. She recommended amazing dishes and drinks, brought me a birthday shot, and even surprised me with a rose and a beautiful birthday dessert. It was such a thoughtful and heartfelt touch. The food was absolutely phenomenal — I ordered way too much because I wanted to try everything, and I have zero regrets (plus leftovers are amazing). Every plate was delicious and beautifully seasoned. My favorite was the squash blossom and grilled branzino. The atmosphere, the candlelight, the service, and the flavors all came together perfectly. Roxy truly elevated the experience with her energy, attentiveness, and kindness. Thank you for making my birthday so special. I can’t wait to come back.

Fantastic place. Really cool dark look to it. It’s like an old church inside with beautiful stained glass and really nice decorations. It’s almost medieval-like. But the food is just delicious. It’s not your average cheap Mexican restaurant; it is a little pricey but the food is amazing. All the appetizers we got were fantastic (huitlacoche tamal and the caviar crab cake ) and the ribs were delicious. Honestly, even the sides of the dish were great. I’m usually not a fan of paying a lot for Mexican food but I’ll make an exception for this place. It’s such a different cool experience. 100% recommend for a date night and please try some of the weird dishes. If you just want tacos you can go anywhere else.

Service was amazing! Went for my birthday and the server was attentive and really wanted us to enjoy the experience. Second stay at La fayette and I’ll have to make a reservation here next visit as well! The ribs were so wonderful, the margarita was the best I’ve ever had! So smooth and refreshing! Pricey, but worth it for every detail and ounce of loved poured into this place

Today was the first time we have ever been here and it was an excellent choice. Roxanne was our server and she was very welcoming, attentive, and gave great recommendations. We ordered the garlic shrimp tacos (MUST TRY), and the guacamole con chicarones and added queso fresco. The atmosphere is VERY unique Spanish/ Mexican decor which was beautiful. Thank you and we will be back again!

Dimly lit which is great for a date or hanging out with friends. The atmosphere is conducive to having good conversation. The menu consists of dishes that pair well together or can be the complete opposite to challenge your taste buds. I went with my daughter and we thoroughly enjoyed the corn donut, which isn't made from corn. It was very tasty. Loved the service from Danny was phenomenal he knows what pairs well on the menu and makes great recommendations. There is a wide selection of tequila and mezcal. The drinks are unique so come prepared to experiment! That's what this resturant is all about! Loved the ambiance and the friendliness of our waiter. You won't be disappointed.

Truly an experience! My wife and I went for the first time to celebrate our 6 year wedding anniversary. The vibes of the restaurant are unmatched upon walking in it was so dark couldn't see much but when my eyes adjusted the interior was stunning from the stained glass windows to the old school architecture look was amazing. Not only the but the food was phenomenal we started with the chicken tacos which were a 10/10 some of the best fried chicken tacos I've ever had for our entire we ordered the steak and can I say one of the best deals I've had in a long time another 10/10! After finishing our dinner the waitress did bring out a pineapple sorbet with hibiscus orbs and a rose as a anniversary dessert on the house the sorbet was so refreshing and such a nice gesture when we find ourselves back in San Diego would visit again for sure!
